The final part of our series on Ecclesiastes.
Today we are talking about ‘Randomness’.
Is a big theme through the book of Ecclesiastes or Koheleth.
The goal of Ecclesiastes is to deconstruct the ways that we find meaning apart from God. That’s why theres all this talk about Hevel, and the meaninglessness of life.
Intro from Editor
Summary by the Author – fear God and obey his commandments
Meaning is found in relationship with God.
Time marches on, in the face of time, and death, everything is meaningless.
Ecclesisastes is part of the wisdom literature in the Old Testament, but seems to fly in the face of proverbial wisdom. In Proverbs A + B = C, if you do A add B, then you will get C.
As a Christian pastor you cannot fail! (Pappa Tay’s paraphrase).
You get an idea that if you are righteous then your life will be clear, and if you are bad, then bad things will happen to you.
If I am righteous I will be rescued from trouble, if I am wicked, then I will be in trouble.
This is the sort of place that you get this theology that if you are suffering, then it is because of some sort of sin that you are committing. If you are holy and righteous before God then you will be living the good life (Preachers of LA).
The Refrain of Proverbs
Good = blessing
Bad = trouble
The Refrain of Ecclesiastes
Evil people triumph, and good become poor.
If you live life long enough, you look around and realise that random stuff just happens.
Good people die randomly. Bad people have good ideas and intent products and become rich.
Life is random
Sickness, or accidents happen.
Being righteous or good will not protect you from that. Proverbs teaches the opposite.
Having Jesus in your life doesn’t automatically stop bad stuff from happening to you.
What Jesus does is usher in New Creation – Revelation 21 – we experience some of that through the work of Jesus. Jesus on the cross = D Day. Victory is secured, but there was still work to do.
There is inbreaking of the Kingdom, and so people get healed and blessed, but it is like a preview of what life is going to be like. It is not normative right now, otherwise the Kingdom would have come!
Following Jesus means that you do experience a better life, but it doesn’t mean money or cars.
Jesus doesn’t fix problems, but he gives you the ability to work through them. He has a plan, Jeremiah 29:11 it doesn’t mean that you will have a stress free life.
The only way to learn endurance is to endure.
You may be hurting, and you never know if God will use that one day.
You don’t run a marathon by watching others run a marathon.
You don’t learn patience by not having to wait for stuff.
“In my life, I’ve tried all of these things, let me pass on to you all of the things I have learnt. I have tried all of these things, and in the end I have realised that those things won’t give you meaning.”
In our culture we chase after things for meaning, other than God, and we will be miserable if we do.
There is a randomness to life, and to place your hope in things other than God, you will be disappointed.
Pappa Tay went out to town, to the Casino. Put $20 down on roulette. God says “You will NEVER make money from gambling!”
Of course, lost all the money. Knows what it will land on next turn, and it does. God is laughing at Taylor.
”But beyond these, my son, be warned: there is no end to the making of many books, and much study wearies the body. When all has been heard, the conclusion of the matter is this: fear God and keep his commands, because this is for all humanity. For God will bring every act to judgment, including every hidden thing, whether good or evil.”
