Porn (Part 3)

The crazy thing, though, is that your brain doesn’t know the difference between the image and the real. That’s why, if I show you a picture of food, like chocolate cake, and you’re hungry, your body will react the same way as if it were real cake that was sitting there in front of you. That’s why you can go through a recipie magazine and feel hungry and your stomach will growl, because your brain can’t tell the difference, so your body reacts in the same way.

Food and porn have the same effect on the brain, so think about how this might affect your brain in terms of the natural and normal desire for sex…

As you reward your brain with dopamine it begins to secrete a chemical called delta foss B, which then begins to build up in your brain’s reward circuit. Now as you begin to consume excess natural rewards, which has the same effect as consuming drugs, this build up of delta foss B begins to rewrite and physically alter your brain, like a ball of plasticine.

Your brain is not hard and fixed. It is maliable and pliable, and can be changed physically by the things that we do – scary right? This is called neuroplasticity.

The fact is that we can re-wire our brains without even realising it! What this re-wiring does is create new neural pathways in your brain that make you crave more and more of the behaviour that has given you the reward in the first place.

Then, what will happen is you will see other changes – and these changes happen in the brains of all drug users as well, interesting stuff, isn’t it? The first thing that happens is that there is a desensitisation that occurs. There is a numbed pleasure response, this means that everyday pleasures seem to fade into insignificance when compared with the pleasure that you will get from satisfying your craving, so if it’s food or drugs OR porn it will make all other pleasure seem mundane by comparison. What happens then is, not only do these other pleasure sources fade into the background, but they become dull and boring and mundane and in no way exciting, but the trigger – porn in this case – is SUPER exciting! And this in turn erodes the will power of the person who is using. This actually changes the frontal cortex in your brain!

It also may lead to other symptoms that many may not be aware of, some of the ones that have been changed simply by porn users quitting are:

  • ADHD
  • Social anxiety
  • Depression
  • OCD
  • Concentration problems

Do you see now how what you do in private affects what you do in public yet? These are all issues that men who have quit looking at porn have also been able to quit medication for, because their brains have been ‘reset’. If we go back to this idea of the plastic brain it is possible to change it back by controlling the chemicals that made the original changes. One of the analogies that is used most often is that of a path through a field:

Let’s explore this a little more in the next and final post.
