Porn (Part 2)

The big example from recent times is Len Brown and how he committed adultery http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/politics/9285772/Mayor-Len-Brown-confirms-affair.

{I had a few conversations about this where people thought that it didn’t affect his performance as mayor, because it was part of the realm of the private, and so had no bearing on how he conducted himself in his official capacity. I was often at odds with these people, because I thought that he should have been removed from office as it shows his true character, one of deceit and the breaking of trust, and damaging of relationships. How is he going to conduct business on behalf of people now? How has he been really conducting business all this time? This has simply revealed who he is really.}

The thing is, that when you say to Jesus that he is lord, you are surrendering every area of your life to him, he demands it all! He doesn’t just want the part that people see on Sunday. He wants the part or your life that you spend alone I your room, or that you spend with people who are not Christian, or that you spend on holiday. The same way that you cannot compartmentalise the way that your life is, you cannot simply give Jesus a part of your life, you can’t say to him – this part is mine, okay? I’ll give you all of the others, but I need to keep this part for myself, so I’ll listen to you here, but I’m the one who is going to be in charge here. The Greek word lord – kyrios means the person to whom someone or something belongs, the one who has supreme power over that thing. It comes from a root word that means supreme. So Jesus demands supremacy over your life, because he knows that one part affects the other parts, and that you can’t really separate out your private habits from how you behave in public.

It’s the same with viewing pornography, but we will get to that in a moment! Because what I want to talk about right now is food. Just hang in there, because I am going somewhere with this! And here we move from the theological to the biological reasons why Jesus demands your whole life.

old brain, new brain

In your brain there are two main sections, the old brain and the new brain. The old brain is the place where all of those animal instincts live, the things that drive your survival, so that’s where your desire for food is. This is the part of your body that, when you see that massive piece of cake, says to you that you need to eat this piece of cake. You have to have it! You have to get this! If you don’t then you might not survive the winter! This is called the reward circuit and it is there to give us natural rewards for seeking out things that are needed for our survival.

Reward system

So when we eat high calorie, high sugar food, our brain releases a drug called dopamine to encourage us to get more of this type of food. This is how the reward circuit in your brain works. Too much dopamine, however, can override the natural mechanism that says “I’ve had enough!” That’s how we eat too much. This was first seen in rats – all rats, when given exposure to unlimited junk food, gorged themselves to obesity because they activate this natural reward system, but only about 10% of them end up being addicted to drugs like cocaine or alcohol! That’s how powerful these natural reward overloads are.

Let’s look at more of this in part 3.
